Here is a interview we did for a great blog!

If you’ve never snooped around on Etsy.com, we highly recommend it. Especially if you’re a fan of kitsch and all things original. There, you’ll find goods from hundreds of talented artists, many of whom use recycled materials. That’s where we found Iowa artist, Meg Gibson, co-owner of Wooly Wooly Company. We fell in love with their fingerless gloves, scarves, hats and one-of-a-kind lap top sleeves. They sell products between $5 and $60.

Q Meg, tell us about your company and how it was born.

A Wooly Wooly Company is a cottage industry run by two sisters with many family helpers . Together we create one-of-a-kind pieces from recycled wool sweaters that we felt and shape into purses and accessories. Felted wool is an artistic, durable medium and our unique approach to pattern-making enables us to create a 100% original design for each piece. We also recycle vintage findings, including old buttons, silk scarves, blouses and leather. Our product is not only the perfect combination of style and functionality. It is also eco-friendly.
Q Are all of your products made from repurposed materials?

A The only things not repurposed are our WOOLY tag, magnetic closures, rivets and thread. We gather from charitable thrift stores, friends and family, loads of sweater, vintage buttons, silk shirts and ties, old purses and leather. We have so much fun creating with recycled materials.
Q Have you gotten a good response from customers on Etsy?

A It’s great having an Etsy store, but we have just an absolute ball at shows and our downtown market in the spring and summer months. Seeing people try our stuff on and admiring what we made is a rush. We have tons of repeat customers, tracking us down for another item or giving us ideas for new and different products to try. We still have yet to master the “perfect doggie sweater”, but maybe by this fall we’ll have it down.

Q Any advice to those considering a “green product” business?

A One of my favorite lines is, “the possibilities are endless.” Whatever material/medium you are using, think if there is something else you could recycle and repurpose, instead. It can even be a small step, like using recycled paper for your business card. Anything that will decrease our own carbon footprint.
Q What’s the most rewarding thing about your business and what drives you?

A The most rewarding thing would be the interaction with people who “get” what we are doing. Producing a durable, fashionable and affordable product out of recycled materials.

What drives me? My sister Molly. We have a riot working and creating together. My whole life I have looked up to her and usually copied all of her creative ideas; it is so much fun doing this adventure together.

Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us, Meg! Check out Meg and Molly’s handmade, sustainable products at WoolyWooly.etsy.com.
